Thomas Trash Cleanup and Trail Work Day

by Katie Teems, NHT AmeriCorps Member

April showers on Earth Day this year pushed back the date of the Thomas Downtown Trash Cleanup and Trail Work day, hosted by New Historic Thomas and cosponsored by Mountain Laurel Learning Cooperative, the City of Thomas, and WV DOH, to April 29th. The sun came out just in time, and over twenty people came to collect litter in Downtown Thomas; volunteers collected Twenty-Five bags of trash!

Volunteers also had the option to work on Thomas' Beginner Mountain Bike Trail within the Thomas Trails System. Despite the mud, a couple of volunteers worked with trail builder Zachary Adams of Appalachian Dirt to clip roots and haul timber for this trail's construction.

After a morning of picking up trash and working on the trail, volunteers gathered under the Thomas City Park Pavilion for a picnic lunch with pasta salad provided by Sirianni's, hummus and pita provided by Purple Fiddle, and burgers and hot dogs provided by the Davis Shop 'N' Save.

Our volunteers ate with smiles and chatted, while some of the children played in the rhododendron next to the Pavilion.

New Historic Thomas would like to thank all of April 29th's volunteers as well as Sirianni's, Purple Fiddle, and Shop 'N' Save for generous food donations. We'd also like to thank WV DOH for trash pickup equipment as well as Freddie and the city crew for hauling trash away.

If you weren't able to make it to this event and still would like to get involved with the construction of Thomas' new beginner mountain bike trail, below is a calendar of trail work days that you can attend.
